Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles released a statement not long after reports surfaced of the team’s plan to trade Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bears are sending Fields to the Steelers for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick. Many Bears players were upset after learning about the trade.
The Chicago Bears wanted to find a trade before free agency
The Bears were expected to try and trade Fields before the start of free agency. However, finding a trade partner wasn’t as easy as the Bears’ front office had anticipated. The Bears hold the No. 1 pick, and the team will likely select Caleb Williams in April.
Bears GM spoke to Justin Fields on Saturday
Per a statement by the Bears, Poles said the team had been attempting to trade Fields for weeks:
“We have engaged in multiple trade conversations in recent weeks and believe trading Justin at this time to Pittsburgh is what is best for both Justin and the Bears. Today we spoke to Justin to inform him of the trade and the rationale behind it for us as a club.
We want to thank him for his tireless dedication, leadership and all he poured into our franchise and community the last three years and wish him the best towards a long and successful NFL career.”
