The Chicago Bears have always loved Cole Kmet ever since they drafted him out of Notre Dame in 2020. They now are making a long term commitment to the tight end. Ahead of training camp, the Bears signed Kmet to a four-year contract extension.
Chicago Bears Extend TE Cole Kmet
This is the first extension that general manager Ryan Poles has handed out. The four-year $50 million contract has $32 million in guaranteed money. While Kmet has not had world beating numbers, he has slowly improved every year. Last season he caught 50 balls for 544 yards and a career high seven touchdowns. For an offense that was no known for its passing prowess, this is pretty good. The team is hoping that he continues to improve and can be one of the best tight ends in football in a couple of years.
Smart Investment Or Fool’s Gold?
There is some risk in the deal. While the deal is ranked ninth in terms of money for tight ends, this is a huge investment for a player that has never had over 600 yards receiving in a year. The hope for Kmet is that the acquisitions of DJ Moore and Robert Tonyan will bring more opportunities for the 24-year-old. If Kmet continues to improve, this deal is going to look savvy. If he plateaus, the team could be paying big money for a player that isn’t producing.
Will Cole Kmet beat his receiving yards from last year? The Chicago Bears are hoping so. The Bears need to show improvement on the offensive end this year. If they don’t, there could be some big changes coming in Chicago.
