Over the last few weeks, the calls for the Los Angeles Chargers to fire head coach Brandon Staley have increased even more. After yet another disappointing season, it seems like that the franchise will go a different direction in the offseason. Jim Harbaugh has been a name that has come up a lot, but no one truly knows what Harbaugh is wanting to do.
Due to all of the drama at Michigan, it seems much more likely that Harbaugh would leave to take an NFL job than it has over the last few years. The buzz has continued growing about Harbaugh returning to the NFL.
There are a lot of teams who would love to hire Harbaugh as their next head coach, but perhaps none more than the Chargers.
Chargers Chances To Hire Jim Harbaugh Seem To Get A Major Boost
In a recent quote from NFL analyst Mike Greenberg, the Chargers’ chances to land Harbaugh in the offseason seem to have gotten a boost.
“When I talked to Jim Harbaugh he talked about Justin Herbert for five minutes and he loves him.. I do not think that Harbaugh will be back at Michigan next year.”
Obviously, Greenberg is hinting that he thinks there’s a good chance Harbaugh will leave Michigan to coach Herbert and the Chargers. It’s certainly an intriguing job for any potential coaching candidate.
Herbert has received a ton of criticism for the Chargers’ lack of success. Despite the criticism, he has put up numbers that prove he is among the NFL’s elite group of quarterbacks. With an offensive coach and one good at working with quarterbacks like Harbaugh, he would have a great chance to take another leap.
At this point in the season, the Chargers are all but done when it comes to playoff contention. They were able to squeak out a win over the lowly New England Patriots, but only won by a final score of 6-0. Winning like that against such a bad team is almost as bad as a loss.
It will be interesting to see what the Chargers look to do in the offseason. Jim Harbaugh seems like a great place to start if they do move on from Staley. If they’re interested, it sounds like the interest would be very much mutual.
