For a struggling team like the Carolina Panthers, they can’t really be choosy when it comes to the free agents that they will target this 2024. Almost all areas of the team can be improved, though defense is something they might want to focus at to begin with.
According to a recent article by Bleacher Report detailing the free agency needs of each NFL team, the Panthers are set to take a significant blow defensively in the offseason, particularly in the cornerback position where many players have expiring contracts.
In line with that, Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Amik Robertson could be an ideal target for the rebuilding Panthers, especially since they need more young bloods that can be with them long-term as they build around quarterback Bryce Young.
“Carolina is scheduled to lose some depth at cornerback in the offseason. Also, Jeremy Chinn is an impending free agent, and Chinn has taken a lot of snaps as a slot corner throughout his career. So the defense could afford to add some help on the back end this spring,” the Bleacher Report article explained on why the Panthers could target Amik Robertson in free agency.
“Robertson has primarily been a backup in Las Vegas, but he has made a few spot starts over the last couple of years and has been a solid player in that role. The four-year veteran also has experience playing inside and out on the boundary, making him a good fit in free agency for the Panthers.”
Amik Robertson has every reason to pick the Carolina Panthers as well. With the young team, he could have a more prominent role and be an impactful player. For a young CB looking to establish himself, he needs every opportunity to play that he can get.
As for the Panthers, Robertson has been a stable cornerback despite not having plenty of starting experience in years past. This 2023 season, he has tallied two interceptions, six passes defended, one sack, 43 combined tackles and two tackles for loss. He is also only 25 years old, so he fits well in the timeline that they are currently in.
Carolina Panthers’ Biggest Needs After Forgettable Season
The Carolina Panthers are the worst team in the NFL this 2023 season, and making matters worse for them, they won’t even be able to have the top pick in the draft come 2024 after trading it to the Chicago Bears last offseason in order to draft Bryce Young.
While Young has shown flashes of brilliance, it definitely looks he needs more time in order to find his rhythm in the NFL.
Of course Carolina can help by providing him with more weapons and better protection, as well as defense. But at the end of the day, it all boils down to being patient and letting their young team develop.
The Panthers will need some veterans as well in hopes of building good habits for the team as they try to create a future contender. With that said, the 2024 offseason will be important as they hope to take a step in the right direction.
Hopefully, the Panthers can get Young the help he needs that will allow him to really thrive.
