Colin Kaepernick has ambitions to return to the sport of football, and the NFL is set to partner with Caitlin Clark next week to brainstorm ideas to promote the sport ahead of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Kaepernick last played in the NFL in 2016. The No. 36 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft was blackballed from the league for protesting police brutality. At 37, Kaepernick has put his name out to NFL teams in recent seasons hoping for a return to the league.
A return to the NFL as a quarterback seems unlikely. Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has suggested Kaepernick’s best option to return to the league is via the coaching ranks. However, Kaepernick is setting his sights on other paths to throw the football.
Colin Kaepernick wants to return to football in 2028

In 2024, Kaepernick told Sky Sports that he plans to try and make the United States Olympic team for flag football.
“Hopefully we’ll be out there,” Kaepernick said. “We’re gonna work on some things, see if we can make it in there. But we’d love to be out there.”
Meagan Rapinoe said on “A Touch More” podcast with her fiancee Sue Bird that Kaepernick told her during their meeting at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024 that he was interested in playing flag football for the US.
“I would love to see Colin be able to represent America in an Olympics. I think that would be a special…he’s my flag bearer. I think that would be really incredible to have that representation of America be front and center.”
Caitlin Clark will try to help promote flag football

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the league invited Clark to a panel during the league annual meeting next week to discuss what the NFL can do to prop up flag football, especially for female athletes. The league wants to promote male and female flag football for the Olympics.
The league tried hard to cancel Kaepernick from playing in the NFL. It worked, as he hasn’t been in an NFL uniform since 2016. However, Kaepernick could be an interesting draw for flag football as a 40-year-old quarterback.
Wouldn’t it be funny if Clark finds a way to promote the sport for the NFL only for Kaepernick to take the headlines?
