Former US Women’s National Team soccer star Megan Rapinoe ignited controversy this week when she advocated for former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to represent the US in the 2028 Olympic Games.
Colin Kaepernick at the 2028 Olympics?
The US will host the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Kaepernick probably won’t be in shape to play in the NFL in four years. Still, Rapinoe said on “A Touch More” podcast with her fiancee Sue Bird that Kaepernick told her during their meeting at the Paris Olympic Games this summer that he was interested in playing flag football for the US in 2028:
“He would be so good at flag football. I mean, he would be so good in the NFL. Let’s just be clear about that, he’s still being blackballed by the NFL right now…
“I would love to see Colin be able to represent America in an Olympics. I think that would be a special…he’s my flag bearer. I think that would be really incredible to have that representation of America be front and center.”
Megan Rapinoe called out for comments
Mark Harris with OutKick took umbrage to Rapinoe’s suggestion. Harris thinks the 2028 Olympian should be about celebrating the greatness of the US and not featuring radical dissidents. Harris called Rapinoe’s comments “asinine” because of Kaepernick’s age:
For both Bird and Rapinoe to say this sort of thing out loud, as two women who’s entire lives were sports for decades, is legitimately asinine. They are fully aware that Kaepernick has not played a meaningful snap of football since 2016 and that he is 36 years old. He’ll be 39 when the 2028 Olympics roll around.
Tom Brady won a Super Bowl at 43. Kaepernick could probably dominate the flag football world. Regardless of Kaepernick’s skills, Rapinoe knew that innovating his name would cause a stir in the sports world.
Fans react to Rapinoe’s comments
Fans took to social media to respond to Rapinoe’s thoughts on Kaepernick. Some commenters thought she was anti-American for standing up for Kaepernick.
Megan Rapinoe is the biggest anti-American in our country.
Stop giving her a platform. She sucks.

🤦♀️Ah, Megan Rapinoe, the Queen of Woke, the High Priestess of Virtue Signaling. She preaches tolerance while demonizing dissent, a champion of hypocrisy, a master of double standards. Ok? Ok.

I think Caitlin Clark is owed a trip to the Olympics before Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick just gotta refocus his energy on flag football and he’ll be the starter in a week https://t.co/1GHYYIAwkl
