The Buffalo Bills are coming off a heartbreaking playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. This loss makes Josh Allen and the Bills 0-3 against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Not only is this loss devastating for Bills fans, but they also have to face the realization that this was their most realistic chance to win it all. A big reason for that is what the Bills have to pay Josh Allen going forward.
Josh Allen’s Salary Heavily Increases Next Five Seasons
Josh Allen will not be doing the Buffalo Bills any favors to assemble a complete roster moving forward. This is because he has been playing on a discount since he was a rookie. In the last three years, Allen has only cost $6 million in base salary combined. However, that is about to drastically change.
Allen is scheduled to earn $23.5 million just in base salary for the 2024 season. It only gets worse after this. Over the next five years, Allen is due $89.5 million in base salary. As a result, this makes it much more difficult for the Bills to sign elite talent to complement Allen.
Lack of Quality Draft Picks
On top of this, the Bills have been successful enough that they do not have a lot of high draft picks. They will have the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, they will not have multiple picks in the first four rounds of that draft. As a result, Buffalo will have to rely on hitting with their late picks next season.
Key Free Agents
Josh Allen’s demanding salary will make it difficult to keep several key pieces due to them being free agents. So, who are some potential players that they could lose? Some players include WR Gabriel Davis, S Micah Hyde, DE Shaq Lawson, and much more.
Buffalo Bills Cursed?
After yesterday’s devastating loss, the question has to come up if the Bills are truly capable of winning with this group. This season was arguably the best chance they will ever get to win with this core group of players.
There have been some claims going around that the Bills are “right there.” However, when you find every way possible to lose to your rivals in the playoffs, this has to be heavily scrutinized. Bills fans may have to face the reality that they are further behind the Chiefs than they realized. Now, a new generation of Bills fans has to live with “wide right” as Buffalo faces an overwhelming salary cap issue.
