The Buffalo Bills hired a defense coach
The Buffalo Bills have found a replacement for their safeties coach. The Bills fired Jim Salgado a few days after losing to the Cincinnati Bengals in the Divisional Round. The Bills surrendered 27 points to the Bengals in snowy conditions. In Salgado’s defense, the secondary wasn’t helped by a lame pass rush in snowy conditions in Buffalo.
The Bills decided to keep defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier after the season. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC, the Bills have found Frazier a new assistant coach. Former Texans safeties coach Joe Danna is joining the staff for next season.

What Dana brings to the Bills
According to a statement by Alec White with the Buffalo Bills, Danna has over a decade of coaching experience in the NFL. He has worked with some special secondary players in the league during that time.
“Prior to his one-year stint in Houston, Danna was a part of the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff for four seasons, two years as the safeties coach (2019-20) and two years as the assistant secondary coach (2017-18). He also spent time as the DB coach for the New York Jets (2015-16) and the Atlanta Falcons (2012-14).
Throughout his professional tenure, Danna has coached several high-level NFL players, including CB Jalen Ramsey, CB A.J. Bouye, CB D.J. Hayden and CB Darrelle Revis.”
The statement also offered praise for the unit that got Salgado fired from the Bills after the postseason.
“The Bills had one of the top secondary groups in the league in 2022, despite dealing with injuries to key players throughout the season. The group allowed an average of six yards per pass attempt (5th in NFL) and the 9th fewest passing TDs to opponents (21).”
Now we’ll see if Danna can get a better performance out of the unit than Salgado. It appears having one of the top secondary units isn’t a high enough standard for the Buffalo Bills anymore.
