Controversially-Fired Tennessee Titans HC Mike Vrabel Finally Lands New Job for 2024

According to NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Field Yates, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is being hired by the Cleveland Browns as a coaching and personnel consultant.

Vrabel was a star linebacker for the Ohio State Buckeyes and will be making his return to the state of Ohio. Vrabel was the head coach of the Titans from 2018 to 2023 after spending a year as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans in 2017.

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel brought success to the Titans that hadn’t been seen since the turn of the century. Vrabel brought them to the conference championship for the first time since they lost in 2002 under head coach Jeff Fisher.

Vrabel made the playoffs in three of the six years in which he was the head coach for the Titans, including a first-round bid in the 2021 playoffs.

He finished his career in Tennessee with a 54-45 record in 99 games with the Titans following two consecutive losing seasons, which occurred during a rebuilding phase for the organization.

Before the rebuilding phase of 2022 and 2023, the Titans never had a losing record under Vrabel. As a former player, he connected well with the players on his team and they were sad to see him go. Vrabel explained his coaching philosophy in an article from The Ringer.

 “Help them become a better player, which in turn is going to help their family make more money,” Vrabel told me of his philosophy. “This is professional sports. We can all say we want to do it for the love of the game. But we also do it to support our families. It’s a tough road to playing professional sports, especially football, so there’s got to be some of that.”

Star running back Derrick Henry was shocked at the firing of Vrabel and explained how much he meant to the players in an article from The Tennessean.

“Wow. Wow. I’m shocked. Coach Vrabel is a leader of men. He is a great coach and teacher. I know he will get another opportunity right away. I look forward to it,” Henry told The Athletic.

According to Robert Mays of The Athletic, Vrabel’s new role with the Cleveland Browns is unique.

Vrabel, who is now an experienced NFL coach, will exist as a resource to the many young coaches employed by the Browns, including head coach Kevin Stefanski.

The Browns fared well in the 2023 season with one of the best defenses in the NFL, but they fell apart when the playoffs came around. While Vrabel hasn’t made it to the Super Bowl, he has experience with deep playoff runs as a head coach.

Vrabel does have Super Bowl experience, although that experience came from his time as a player. Many Browns fans are excited to have Vrabel as a part of the organization.
