Brock Purdy entered Week 16 as the heavy favorite to win NFL MVP. But after his ugly performance in the San Francisco 49ers’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens, his chances drastically dropped.
The Niners QB is no longer the frontrunner for the MVP award, with Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson surpassing him as the favorite.
On BetMGM, Purdy had the best MVP odds at -275 before the Christmas Day game’s kickoff. After his zero-touchdown and four-interception performance in the 49ers’ 33-19 defeat, it plummeted to +1300, per The 33rd Team.
On other betting sites, Purdy is now at +600, behind Jackson who is at -150 and Christian McCaffrey who is at +400, according to sports business reporter Darren Rovell.
That’s definitely a massive turnaround for a player who, a week ago, was already being hailed as the sure-fire MVP. Unfortunately, that’s the harsh reality of the NFL. It’s simply hard to win MVP after such ugly game that Purdy had.
Of course it’s not yet too late to change things and turn the MVP tables once again, but it will take a lot for Brock Purdy to do just that. Not only does he need to have dominant performances in their last two games of the season, but he will also need Lamar Jackson to play so poorly in order to topple him from the top.
Considering how confident Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are right now, the San Francisco 49ers signal-caller has his work cut out for him.
The 49ers play the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams in Weeks 17 and 18, respectively. It should be a good opportunity for Purdy to reclaim his MVP lead, but he will have to stay perfect.
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy Speaks Out on Harsh Reality of NFL
In his postgame interview, Brock Purdy couldn’t help but reflect on his performance. It was definitely an uncharacteristic display, and it couldn’t have come at the worst possible team. He really had to play that bad in a big game against another top team.
The narrative quickly changes in such defining games. Purdy failed to respond for the San Francisco 49ers, and so now he’s the subject of criticisms.
Purdy has plenty of questions for himself, and he’s hoping to answer it sooner rather than later.
“I’ve got to ask myself ‘Who are you? What do you stand for? Who are you when things are good? Who are you when things don’t go your way?'” Purdy shared, via Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports.
“Easy to be riding the high and thinking you’re the man when things are going well and you’re winning. This is the reality of the NFL.”
Sure enough, the 49ers faithful are hoping that Purdy can bounce back after the loss.
