The Tennessee Titans have made a decision as to who their starting quarterback will be in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to Jeremy Fowler, QB Will Levis is expected to get the nod for the second straight week. The Titans will have a short turnaround for this game because their matchup against the Steelers is on Thursday Night Football.
Will Levis
Levis made his professional debut on Sunday and secured a win over the Atlanta Falcons. The rookie quarterback out of Kentucky looked impressive doing so.
He went 19/29 with 238 passing yards and had four touchdown passes. Best of all, he did not throw an interception in this game.
The touchdown passes are notable considering what his predecessor has done this season. Starting QB Ryan Tannehill only has two touchdown passes in six games this season.
How Did the Tennessee Titans Get Here?
Levis had two weeks to prepare for this game. The Tennessee Titans had a bye the week prior after their Week 6 loss in London to the Baltimore Ravens. It was then that starting QB Ryan Tannehill suffered an ankle injury that ended up keeping him out of yesterday’s game.
However, Levis did not play in that London game despite Tannehill getting hurt in the middle of it. He was not activated in that game, so the Titans had to send in QB Malik Willis instead.
Willis’ performance was not one to remember. He had just five pass attempts that went for 74 yards.
Willis has just 350 passing yards in his NFL career. He still has not thrown a touchdown pass yet.
Is This the End for Ryan Tannehill?
Right now, an injury is keeping Tannehill on the sidelines. However, there are legitimate questions arising as to whether Tannehill is done being a starting QB in the NFL.
His 2023 season has been one to forget so far. Tennessee is just 2-4 in games he has started. Tannehill averages fewer than 200 passing yards per game, with six interceptions and just two touchdown passes.
If Levis has another good performance on Thursday against the Steelers, there could be more calls for Levis to keep the starting job.
This is Tannehill’s 12th year in the NFL and he is 35 years old. After being labeled a bust during his tenure with the Miami Dolphins, he found a new home in Tennessee where he revitalized his NFL career for the last six seasons.
However, it may be time for the Titans to pass the torch.
