The NFL has released the five finalists for the AP comeback player of the year and they are all great options to take home the award for very different reasons. Although Damar Hamlin is almost the sure candidate to take home the award given what he had to come back from, the other candidates are all players that would win in a different year.
NFL Comeback Player Nominees
The four other candidates are quarterbacks that had huge bounce back years. Starting with Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco, who came back from sitting on the couch to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league the second half of the season and brought the Brown to the playoffs.
Flacco could easily be the comeback player of the year in any other season as he led the Browns exceptionally well until the playoffs, and with the injuries they had it was impressive for any quarterback to do that let alone a guy who was sitting on his couch in the beginning of the year.
Comeback Quarterbacks
Both Tua Tagaviola of the Miami Dolphins, and Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams, had great years coming back from injuries the previous season. Tua led the league in many important stat categories and had the Dolphins looking like one of the best offenses in the league for the better part of the season.
Matthew Stafford also had a great year for the Rams coming back from a season last year where he suffered a few injuries. Both of these guys got bounced in the first round pf the playoffs, but both of them would be top candidates to win this award in any other year that there wasn’t a player who came back from nearly dying on the field.
Baker Mayfield Deserves A Nod

Baker Mayfield should take home a separate award no matter who wins, as he had the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a few plays away from the NFC Championship. He had an outstanding year for the Bucs in their first year without Tom Brady, and he truly made a real comeback proving all the doubters wrong .
Baker did not just come back from a bad season, he came all the way back from many NFL seasons of getting tossed around from team to team. He not only had a great year winning his division, he also proved the NFL world wrong about him and that he is a franchise guy in this league. While Damar Hamlin is almost certain to take home the award given what he had come back from, Baker should at least get a consolation prize as his comeback story is one of the most impressive comebacks we have seen in the NFL in a long time.
