The Minnesota Vikings made arguably the biggest splash of the NFL trade deadline yet. According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Vikings are trading for Arizona Cardinals QB Joshua Dobbs.
Adam Schefter added that the Cardinals will receive a sixth-round pick from the Vikings. In return, they will send them a seventh-round pick that could turn into a sixth-round pick.
Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings were facing a problematic situation at the quarterback position. That is because QB Kirk Cousins went down for the season last week with a torn Achilles. It left the Vikings with very few options on their current roster outside of rookie QB Jaren Hall.
Dobbs has started every game for the Arizona Cardinals so far this season.
Despite a 1-7 record in those games, Dobbs has proven he is a capable quarterback to fill in.
This season, he has 1,569 passing yards and eight touchdown passes. Dobbs has also kept turnovers to a minimum, with just five interceptions.
Minnesota can also offer Dobbs decent weapons at wide receiver. Rookie WR Jordan Addison is having a breakout season so far, with seven touchdown receptions and 482 receiving yards.
Plus, they have star WR Justin Jefferson coming back later this season. Right now, Jefferson is currently dealing with a hamstring injury.
It is safe to say that Dobbs will get an upgrade regarding target receivers here.
The Vikings are sitting with a 4-4 record and are tied for the final NFC wild-card spot. This move could prove that they do not want to give up their chances of making the playoffs just yet.
Arizona Cardinals
As for the Cardinals, this move confirms that they will be sellers at this year’s trade deadline. They are sitting with a 1-7 record and currently hold the #1 overall draft pick for the 2024 NFL Draft.
For now, it looks like QB Clayton Tune will take over quarterback duties for the Cardinals. Kyler Murray could come back later this season, but there is no confirmed timeline at the time of writing.
Considering that QB Caleb Williams from USC will likely enter the 2024 NFL Draft, Arizona is looking towards their future and their chances of having the top pick to draft him. With their current record, they are certainly in the mix.
