The Kansas City Chiefs are attempting to do something no team has ever done before: win three consecutive Super Bowls. However, they have made a trade in order to get a draft pick and free up some room on their cap. The Kansas City Chiefs are trading cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and swapping 2024 seventh-round picks, according to Tom Pelissero.
Sneed was signed under the franchise tag and the holdup on the deal was the contract extension that he was going to sign when traded. The details are intriguing as well as he signed a four-year, $76 million contract with $55 million guaranteed. This move does a few different things for both sides.
For Kansas City, this frees up some room and allows the Chiefs to either add another weapon as they free up the $19.8 million that L’Jarius Sneed had via the franchise tag. They can go and sign some additional players as there are impactful free agents out there still.
For Tennessee, this helps create a strong secondary and makes the team better as they attempt to compete in the AFC South. The Titans have made some splashes this offseason by signing wide receiver Calvin Ridley, running back Tony Pollard, and cornerback Chidobe Awuzie.
L’Jarius Sneed had a strong 2023 season as he finished with two interceptions, 14 pass deflections, and a forced fumble. When targetted against, quarterbacks had a 51.0 completion percentage, a stark improvement from the 66.7% in 2022.
What do the Kansas City Chiefs do in free agency?
The Kansas City Chiefs have some decisions that they can make with the $19.8 million coming off their books now. They can go out and sign a replacement for Sneed right away as Xavien Howard, J.C. Jackson, and Stephon Gilmore are still on the free-agent market.
The team can also target a wide receiver as players like Odell Beckham Jr., Hunter Renfrow, Michael Thomas and others are available as well. There are still some significant free agents available but adding to the secondary may help. There are still All-Pro safeties in Justin Simmons or Eddie Jackson as well as Jamal Adams.
Kansas City could also add to their offensive line if they do not believe in Wanya Morris blocking Patrick Mahomes’ blind side. There are a bunch of possibilities but do not expect the Chiefs to go quietly into the NFL draft.
