San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk sent the front office a serious message about what he expects the team to do with his contract. The 49ers are negotiating with Aiyuk about extending his time with the 49ers.
A former San Francisco 49ers player felt disrespected this offseason
The 49ers recently lost a veteran player, Arik Armstead, because he felt disrespected by the offer San Francisco gave him this offseason after nine seasons with the team. Aiyuk isn’t going to be disrespected by the 49ers either.
Brandon Aiyuk wants what he deserves
Per a transcription of Aiyuk’s comments on Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe, Aiyuk said he wants to stay with the 49ers, but he wants to get paid his worth. Per the transcription of Aiyuk’s comment by Josh Alper with NBC Sports:
“I’m trying to get what I deserve,” Aiyuk said. “I feel like this season, this season playing football, I figured out who I was as a person and a player — what I bring to the table, what I bring to the locker room, what I bring to the organization. The value I hold when I walk in that building. People gonna follow me because I’ve done it the right way since I’ve been in that building. From the first day I walked in there to when I was in there earlier this morning.
Aiyuk has a serious message for the 49ers’ front office
Aiyuk hinted he would seek to play elsewhere if the 49ers didn’t give him what he deserves:
“From the first day I walked in there to when I was in there earlier this morning. If they don’t see the worth in that, that’s all it is. It ain’t nothing else besides that. I can’t get into it. We got professionals working on both sides, so hopefully we can come to a professional agreement to continue playing professional football.”
The 49ers might not be able to pay everyone what they deserve. That’s a problem elite teams have when the salary cap is stretched thin. The 49ers must also give Brock Purdy what he deserves, possibly as soon as next offseason. Frankly, Purdy is the most underpaid quarterback in the NFL right now.
But then again, much of Purdy’s success is tied to Aiyuk. Can the 49ers afford to keep both?
