Based on their performance last season, the Baltimore Ravens certainly improved from their 2022-23 campaign. But if they truly want to contend, they might have to let Ronnie Stanley go in the offseason.
Even though the team endured injuries to several players, such as Trayvon Mullen, Nick Moore, J.K. Dobbins, Mark Andrews, and Keaton Mitchell, during the preseason and around the start of the 2023 campaign, Baltimore still had its best run yet since 2019. This is clearly seen when the Ravens finished the regular season strong by capturing the first place in the NFC North division with a dominant 13-4 record.
That dominance carried over to the playoffs when the Ravens decimated the Houston Texans with a score of 34-10. And even though Baltimore lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, last season’s eventual Super Bowl winner, the run they had with Lamar Jackson putting up an MVP-worthy campaign while being guided by one of the NFL’s best coaching staffs was one for the ages.
Why Ronnie Stanley Needs To Be Let Go By the Baltimore Ravens
If the Ravens want to reach the promised land next season, certain players will have to be let go. Among them is Ronnie Stanley, an offensive tackle who signed a $98 million contract with the team. Aaron Schatz explains more in his article for ESPN:
“Once upon a time, Stanley was a first-team All-Pro, one of the best left tackles in the league. But that was five years ago. Stanley struggled last season for the Ravens, and they rotated him with Patrick Mekari. Stanley hasn’t played a full season since that 2019 All-Pro year, and he ranked 38th in pass block win rate (87.2%) among tackles in 2023. Cutting Stanley before June 1 would save $8.3 million on the salary cap but would leave $17.8 million in dead money for 2024. A post-June 1 cut would save $15 million with $11.2 million in dead money for 2024 and additional dead money in 2025,” Schatz wrote.
While there isn’t a direct replacement for Stanley, finding one in the draft or free agency for the Ravens is easier than continuing his contract. In the event Baltimore pulls this feat off, there’s a good chance they can weather the offseason and proceed to put up a good run later this year.
