For West Virginia and Pitt fans, the Backyard Brawl does not need any hype to make the game more interesting. All you have to do is mention the word Pitt to Mountaineer fans, and the rebellion burns like a wildfire. Whether it is a special rendition of Sweet Carolina echoing through the stadium, or a special chant that WVU fans love to yell. This rivalry has one feeling, hate!
College Gameday heads to Acrisure Stadium
West Virginia University and the University of Pittsburgh are separated by only 70 miles along Interstate 79. On September 1st, the two teams will play the 105th addition of the Brawl, and there will be a little added touch to this addition. College Football Gameday will be on hand to bring in first game of the season for these two teams. The announcement made on Thursday just feels right. This is a well-known rivalry game, and more people need to see it. Perhaps that is why the game was moved from Saturday, to a Thursday night primetime game. No matter the date, the newly named Acrisure Stadium will be filled with the Old Gold and Blue. The Mountaineers have already sold out of their allotment of tickets.
History of the Brawl
Pitt owns the better record in the Brawl, leading the series 61-40-3. However, WVU has won the last three games and has won seven of the last ten games. The last meeting between these two rivals was back in November of 2011. West Virginia would go on to win that game, 21-20. The most notable game is one that Mountaineer fans wish they could forget back in 2007. Pitt would defeat WVU 13-9, to end the Mountaineers hopes of playing for a BCS Championship. In the last 20 meetings, including the hated 2007 game, the Mountaineers have owned the team up north, winning 14 of them.
