The Atlanta Falcons are sudden favorites to emerge at the top of the NFC South after bagging Kirk Cousins in free agency. The incredible payday he got after seeing his 2023 season cut short by injuries will be a major talking point for the Falcons throughout the 2024 season.
However, not everything is peachy for Atlanta. They may have broken a rule or two after Kirk Cousins inadvertently revealed it during his introductory press conference with the team.
Kirk Cousins may have admitted the Atlanta Falcons tampered before the 2024 free agency opened

During Cousins’ introductory press conference with the Falcons, he talked about how much he looked forward to playing for such a great organization.
However, the 35-year-old signal-caller somewhat implied that he was already in communication with senior figures within the organization before they were even allowed to reach out.
Per The Spun’s Andrew Holleran:
“There’s great people here,” Cousins said. “And it’s not just the football team. I mean, I’m looking at the support staff. Meeting — calling, yesterday, calling our head athletic trainer, talking to our head of P.R. I’m thinking, we got good people here. And that’s exciting to be a part of.”
League rules do not allow players to speak with members of the franchise outside of the legal operating window. It sounds like Cousins has admitted to tampering, which is likely extremely common across the league, however, it’s rarely admitted to in public light.
The Kansas City Chiefs were caught tampering eight years ago and lost a third-round pick due to this. If allegations of tampering are proven, they could get a punishment of similar value to what Kansas City experienced.
Will Kirk Cousins be worth it for the Falcons?

Even if the Atlanta Falcons were caught tampering, the quality of QB play he showcased in the eight games he played for the Minnesota Vikings last season may convince the team and its fans that any punishment is worth it.
He was on pace to put up a career season, already passing for 2331 yards and 18 touchdowns. It wouldn’t have been weird for him to be in the MVP conversation if he managed to ball out the entire season.
If the former Minnesota and Washington QB manages to bounce back, any kind of punishment the team may get from tampering will be more than worth it.
