The Atlanta Falcons suffered a heartbreaking 9-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 15. As a result, their record fell to 6-8 and they are in serious jeopardy of being left out of the NFL playoffs. So, what do the Falcons plan to do to address this? Today, Atlanta announced a change in the quarterback position.
Taylor Heinicke Is Starting in Week 16
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, head coach Arthur Smith announced that QB Taylor Heinicke will get the nod in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts. On top of this, Heinicke is likely going to be the starting quarterback for the rest of the 2023 season. Desmond Ridder will back up Heinicke in the final three games.
Desmond Ridder’s Poor Performance
Ridder has had a disappointing 2023 NFL season. Because of this, Ridder is now being benched in favor of Heinicke for the second time this season. Just how bad has Ridder been?
Ridder has 2,528 passing yards, 10 touchdown passes, and 10 interceptions in 13 games this season. The Week 15 loss appeared to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Not only did Atlanta lose to a team that was 1-12 selling tickets for 45 cents but Ridder also had a forgettable game. Ridder had 152 passing yards, a touchdown pass, and an interception.
Atlanta Falcons Moving Forward
There is a lot of uncertainty in Atlanta right now. Arthur Smith may be feeling the heat when it comes to job security. Now, Smith has to hope Heinicke steps up next week to have any realistic chance of making the playoffs.
