The total overhaul of the Atlanta Falcons is still in full swing as they attempt to leverage the current state of the NFC South and take the division for themselves.
They have completed the changes they wanted to make for their coaching staff after officially announcing the acquisition of the latest members of their coaching staff.
Atlanta Falcons hire Zac Robinson and Jimmy Lake as new coordinators
Sportsnaut published a piece that confirmed the acquisition of Zac Robinson and Jimmy Lake to help Raheem Morris with the Atlanta Falcons. Robinson takes over the offensive coordinator duties while Lake is in charge of bolstering the defense.
The piece went into further detail about the history of the two new hires:
Robinson, 37, worked with Morris in Los Angeles for all three of those years. He joined the Rams as an assistant quarterbacks coach in 2019, moved to assistant receivers coach in 2020 and shuffled back to assistant QBs coach in 2021. Los Angeles promoted him to passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022.
Lake, 47, was the University of Washington’s head coach in 2020 and 2021 before being let go before the end of his second season. He joined the Rams as assistant head coach for 2023 and has a background coaching defense at the collegiate and NFL levels.
The move is an obvious attempt to help Morris start his reign with the Atlanta Falcons as smoothly as possible. The fact that both have closely worked with him should help the team get used to his schematics more quickly.
Arthur Smith’s last-ditch efforts to keep Falcons job revealed
Morris’ hire shows the Atlanta Falcons’ intent to move on from Arthur Smith as their head coach. Smith had three unsuccessful seasons in the NFL where he failed to help a young Falcons team make the playoffs in a weakened NFC South.
Jonathan Alfano of the Falcon Report reveals that Smith had a last-ditch effort to keep his job in the A before being let go by the Atlanta Falcons. He writes, quoting a piece by The Athletic’s Josh Kendall:
“Part of former head coach Arthur Smith’s pitch for a fourth season in Atlanta was his belief that acquiring a new quarterback would unlock an offense with the potential to be one of the league’s best, according to a team source,” Kendall wrote. “Now that job falls to [new offensive coordinator Zac] Robinson and Morris.”
Desmond Ridder failed to secure his position as QB1 for the Atlanta Falcons, and he will likely lose his job if he doesn’t manage to convince Morris of his abilities. While some of the blame can be placed on Smith, his inability to produce under his offensive scheme will likely see Morris go for a rookie QB that best fits his ideal offense.
