Raheem Morris is leaving the Los Angeles Rams to take over the reins of the Atlanta Falcons.
Morris was a solid contributor behind the team’s improbable run at the NFC Wild Card and is deserving of his appointment. His former head coach, Sean McVay, has nothing but good things to say about his former defensive coordinator.
Los Angeles Rams’ Sean McVay is ‘happy and sad’ over Raheem Morris’ Atlanta hire
During an interview with The Monday Morning Quarterback’s Albert Breer, McVay said that while he’s glad Morris got the opportunity to coach in the NFL, he’s also a bit lonely that a good friend and co-worker is leaving for the NFC East.
Moreover, The Spun’s Andrew Gould wrote about what McVay thought about the Falcons’ newest hire:
“I can’t say enough good things about the guy,” McVay told Breer.
Part of the reason why McVay has complex feelings about Morris’ departure is the latter’s journey back to a head coaching job. Gould writes:
Morris had a long road back to head coaching after going 17-31 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011. He was a defensive backs coach for Washington before working his way up to Atlanta’s defensive coordinator in 2020.
The New Jersey native closed the 2020 campaign as Atlanta’s interim head coach after the Falcons fired Dan Quinn. They gave the full-time role to Arthur Smith, who coached three 7-10 seasons before getting fired earlier this month.
Meanwhile, McVay hired Morris when defensive coordinator Brandon Staley left to join the Los Angeles Chargers. Morris won his second Super Bowl with the Rams.
Moreover, Morris worked alongside McVay under the legendary Mike Shanahan in 2013, when the Washington Commanders were known as the Redskins. Other members of that year’s coaching staff who are now head coaches in the NFL are San Fransisco 49ers’s Kyle Shanahan, Green Bay Packers’ Matt LaFleur, and Miami Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel.
The next time these two men meet on an NFL field, it would be as head coaches of opposing sides. However, you can be sure that no love is lost between the two head coaches.
