Kirk Cousins going to the Atlanta Falcons is one of the biggest storylines in the 2024 offseason. Not only is Cousins helping the team finally find the QB they’ve been lacking, but his deal would also have huge implications on the QB market moving forward.
While the plethora of offensive firepower in the Falcons’ roster would make one think that Cousins decided to move to the ATL with both eyes closed, that is far from the case. A recent report revealed that he consulted with a future Hall of Fame quarterback before signing the dotted line.
Kirk Cousins consulted Drew Brees before finalizing Atlanta Falcons move
Andrew Elmquist of The Cold Wire reported that the Falcons’ newest QB1 consulted former New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees before making the jump to Atlanta.
The story, which was first broken by the NFL Network’s James Palmer, revealed that Cousins asked about GM Terry Fontenot, who he spent a lot of time with back in New Orleans. Palmer then suggested that the talk was what led Cousins to take the plunge.
Can Cousins erase his poor big-game reputation with the Falcons?
Elmquist also writes about the possible issues Cousins will have to address once he starts playing for the Falcons:
It will be interesting to see how Cousins performs in Atlanta, especially since he is coming off an Achilles injury.
Throughout his career, Cousins has been a solid quarterback and, at times, has been one of the best in the league from a statistical perspective.
However, he has been criticized for his ability to win in the biggest games of his career, including primetime and playoff games.
To be fair to Cousins, he was on pace to finish 2023 strongly. While he only played seven games due to an Achilles injury, he managed to compile an impressive stat line of 2331 passing yards and 18 touchdowns with an impressive 70% passing rate.
While these numbers would have ended up being less impressive if he played the entirety of 2023, it’s undeniable that he was playing fantastically with the Minnesota Vikings.
If he manages to replicate that with the Falcons and finally become able to show up in clutch situations, a Super Bowl appearance is in the cards for him and his new team.
