Welcome to the third installment of the best acquisition series. This series reviews each division’s best acquisition from the 2023 offseason. We will review the AFC South.
Criteria for this series:
All individuals featured in this series must fulfill the specified criteria. The players on this list are those who joined a new team through trades or signings in the offseason, excluding draft picks, re-signed players, players claimed during roster cuts, regular season signings, or trades during the NFL Trade Deadline.
Note: Several teams lack a definitive player to be considered the best offseason acquisition. Teams without a definitive player are in italics.
Houston Texans’ best offseason acquisition: RB Devin Singletary.
Houston signed Devin Singletary to 1-year, $2,750,000 contract with the expectation of bringing depth to the running back position and assisting the 31st-ranked rushing offense from last season.
Injuries to Dameon Pierce allowed Singletary to take over as the starting back and helped Houston improve from being the 31st-ranked rushing offense last season to the 22nd-ranked rushing offense.
Singletary had 898 yards on 216 carries and four touchdowns. He also had 30 receptions on 38 targets for 193 yards.
Singletary will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Indianapolis Colts’ best offseason acquisition: DL Samson Ebukam.
Indianapolis signed Samson Ebukam to a 3-year, $24,000,000 contract with the expectation of bringing depth to the defensive line position and being their leading sacker.
Ebukam played well and led the team in sacks, recording 57 tackles, ten for a loss, 17 QB hits, 9.5 sacks, one pass deflection, and three forced fumbles.
Jacksonville Jaguars’ best offseason acquisition: K Brandon McManus.
Jacksonville signed Brandon McManus to a 1-year, $2,350,000 contract with the expectation of being a consistent kicker.
McManus had a decent 2023 campaign. He went 35/35 on extra points, 4/4 from 20-29, 10/10 from 30-39, 11/13 from 40-49, 5/10 from 50+, and 30/37 overall.
McManus will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Tennessee Titans’ best offseason acquisition: WR DeAndre Hopkins.
Tennessee signed DeAndre Hopkins to a 2-year, $26,000,000 contract with the expectation of being their number-one wide receiver.
Although he lost a step, he managed to play in every game and was their leading receiver with 75 receptions on 137 targets for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns.
