The San Francisco 49ers lost 10-19 against the Bears in week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. Through heavy rain and devastating penalties, the 49ers gave up 19 points in the second half of the game. Despite losing their season opener, there were multiple standout players who show future potential for the team.
Talanoa Hufanga
Second-year safety Talanoa Hufanga had an outstanding game, making himself available all over the field. Hufanga combined for 11 tackles, including two tackles for loss and nine solo tackles. Hufanaga truly stood out when he caught an interception. Hufanga’s interception put the team’s offense in great field position. Despite the offense not producing, Hufanga demonstrated how he will make the notorious 49ers’ defense stronger. Hufanga is a player to watch this season.
Jauan Jennings
Third-year wide receiver, Jauan Jennings may not have had the best game statistically, but his ability to get himself open downfield made him a standout player. Jennings had six targets and four receptions for 62 yards. With the heavy rain making the throwing game more difficult, Jennings was able to catch a deep throw from Lance, which could be deadly in future games. Being the team’s wide reviewer three, Jennings is more likely to go unnoticed by opposing defenses, creating more chances for receptions.
Spencer Burford
In his NFL debut, rookie offensive lineman, Spencer Burford had a PFF pass-blocking grade of 87.8. With the 49ers’ offensive line being their biggest weakness and a young Quarterback to defend, Burford provides hope for the team’s future in pass protection. The 49ers lack in pass protection, and Burford has the potential to continue to stand out, giving Trey Lance more time to throw.
