The San Francisco 49ers started their season on a wet and windy day in Chicago ending in disappointing loss to the Chicago Bears, 19-10. It was a tale of two halves for the 49ers opener on Sunday to open their season.
Tale of Two Halves
The 49ers looked to be dominant and completely controlled the game in the first half, heading into the half up 10-0. However, in a downpour, the second half was summed up by the penalties committed to the 49ers. San Francisco committed 12 penalties for 99 yards. The 49ers were sloppy on all three phases of the game, offense, defense, and special teams, and the Bears outplayed the 49ers in the second half. In result to the 49ers sloppiness, the Bears scored 19 unanswered points in the 2nd half.
Lance’s Debut as QB1 in 49ers Opener
Lance had an ordinary day in his 2022 debut. With an interception, he had 164 yards in the air and led San Francisco in rushing yards with 54 yards on 13 carries. Lance had great moments in the first half, but he looked like a first-year NFL starting quarterback in the second half. Lance threw a costly interception to Bears’ DB Eddie Jackson in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Chicago.
Injury Issues in 49ers Opener
The first significant injury for the 49ers was RB Elijah Mitchell’s. Mitchell’s knee injury at the end of the 2nd quarter flipped the game. He did not return to the game. Mitchell’s ankle got rolled up on when Samuel scored a rushing touchdown in the first quarter for the first score of the year for the 49ers. Keep an eye on Mitchell’s injury with his injury history.
What’s next for the 49ers?
The 49ers have a week two matchup with the division rival Seattle Seahawks on September 18th for their home opener at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Let’s see if San Francisco can bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Bears in week two.
