The Packers defeated the Saints at Lambeau field 20-10 on Friday night. The rainy weather definitely had an impact on this game but there was still plenty to digest. Here are 3 takeaways from the Packers second preseason game.
Jordan Love Looks Better
Any Packers preseason game is going to be about Jordan Love’s development. This is another game where the box score doesn’t tell the whole story. 12 for 24 with 113 yards does not seem like a good stat line. However, some of the throws he made were absolute dots. The touchdown pass to who else but Romeo Doubs was placed perfectly. A lot of Love’s incompletions came on drops. Some of the throws were well placed but just dropped by the receivers. The rain definitely played a factor but the Packers have to figure out how to catch the ball. Overall, Love looked more confident and comfortable which is what the Packers wanted to see.
Running Game Looks Solid
On a rainy night, the running game needed to look good and it did! As a team, the Packers rushed for 178 yards and averaged 5.2 yards per carry. This was definitely buoyed by the 51 yard touchdown run by Danny Etling but overall the Packers running game looked solid. There were no huge runs but they were consistently picking up 5-7 yards at a time and putting the offense in manageable situations. During the joint practices with the Saints, the Packers had no luck running the ball so it was positive to see the Packers have success in the second preseason game.
Inside Linebacker Depth?
One of the questions coming into the season was the depth of the inside linebacker position. The Packers may have gotten the answer to those questions tonight. Isaiah McDuffie continued his strong performance from the first preseason game ending the Saints first two drives. He was flying around the field. Krys Barnes also looked solid as well. Having a inside linebacker room of Campbell, Walker, McDuffie, and Barnes is exactly what the Packers want to have going into the regular season. A successful second preseason game for the Packers linebacker room.
There is a lot of improve on but the Packers look like a confident and solid team. There were a lot of takeaways from the Packers second preseason game. The Packers play the Chiefs next week in the final preseason game.
