The 2024 Virginia Tech Pro Day is upon us! On Wednesday, March 27, eight former Hokies are expected to work out in front of representatives from NFL organizations in hopes of improving their draft stock. The players will be measured for official heights and weights, and then they will participate in various drills to test speed, strength, and agility.
Hoping to Catch Some Eyes
The NFL hosted its annual combine a few weeks ago, and unfortunately no Hokies were invited. That makes this Pro Day extremely important, as it is now the best opportunity for these eight former players to showcase their skills and get noticed.
Although a few of the players do have a chance to hear their names called at the NFL Draft (April 25-27 in Detroit, Michigan), defensive tackle Pheldarius Payne is the one with the greatest expectation. However, even his projections vary between a day three pick and an undrafted free agent. He and the rest of the Pro Day hopefuls can use this workout as a chance to slip onto someone’s Big Board or earn some potential free agent interest.
Virginia Tech has had at least one player drafted every year since 1994 – except 2019. With no Hokies invited to the NFL Combine, these workouts are the last hope to keep that streak alive.
In 2023, only Chamarri Conner was drafted, and coincidentally, he was also the only Hokie to attend the Combine. So this Pro Day is essential for the most recent crop of Hokies with NFL aspirations to try to impress a few of the scouts in attendance.
