The Washington Commanders have the number two overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. One of the numerous teams in desperate need of a franchise quarterback, they are in a better spot than most in terms of being able to pick one. With Caleb Williams expected to be picked first overall by the Chicago Bears, Washington basically has their pick of the rest of the quarterback class.
There are several high-profile quarterbacks in this class that could be taken in the first round. Aside from Williams, these include LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, and Oregon’s Bo Nix.
According to multiple reports, the Commanders have their sites set on Daniels, the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner. However, there are also reports that have stated the young quarterback is not to keen on playing for Washington.
The Washington Commanders Hosted Jayden Daniels and Several Other Prospects for a Top-30 Visit
Instead of the typical one-one-meetings with potential draft prospects, the Commanders made the decision to host 20 players, including Daniels, at a Top Golf establishment last week. According to Tyler Forness of Sports Illustrated, the Commanders decided to use this approach because they felt it would give them a better feel of how the prospects act around groups of people and in chaotic situations.
“This in itself is an interesting philosophy. Teams aren’t able to put the players through a workout, but they can interview them and give them a physical among ohter things. By having a mass visit like this, it gives the team an opportunity to see the prospects in a different light than you would get with a solo visit. This is especially important for the Commanders since they have four of the top five quarterbacks in for a visit.”
Forness also notes that the Commanders have probably met one-on-one with Daniels on previous occasions, such as the NFL Scouting Combine and his Pro Day.
Jayden Daniels Was Not Happy with the Washington Commanders’ Top-30 Visit
Despite the probability that the Commanders and Daniels have met on previous occasions, the rumored number two overall pick’s agent made it clear that he and his client were not happy that Daniels’ top-30 visiting with Washington was in a group setting.
In a video aired on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Daniels and his agent were not pleased:
“It did not seem to go over very well with the agent for Jayden Daniels, Ron Butler, who sounded off on social media last night that he did not seem overly pleased with the process.
“Jayden Daniels believed it was going to be a meeting with just him, meeting with the Commanders [because] many people feel like he will be the number two overall pick by the Commanders.
“But the Commanders have now opened up the process.”
It should be noted that Daniels was not the only top quarterback prospect at the top-30 visit.
If the Commanders think Daniels may not play for them, they could look elsewhere.
