Perhaps unexpectedly, the Seattle Seahawks got the player that may well have been their top ranked defensive player on the board when they selected Byron Murphy II with the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Best Defensive Tackle Fell To The Seattle Seahawks After A Unique Offensive Player Run
Sitting just behind an unprecedented run on offense to start the draft, where a tight end, 3 receivers, 4 offensive tackles and a whopping 6 quarterbacks all went in the first 14 picks, the Seahawks had their choice of every defensive player in the class, save for UCLA’s Laitu Latu, selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the 15th pick, who some teams had off their draft board for medical concerns.
As such, it comes as no surprise that the Seahawks, who did not have a need at tackle or receiver – and knew they were not in range to select one of the elite QBs in the draft – were thrilled to be able to select the Texas defensive tackle as late as they did.
And so, it will also be unsurprising that the NFL’s sole Pacific North West representative has already wrapped up contract negotiations with Murphy II, signing him to fairly standard rookie deal, all of which is guaranteed, per Tom Pelissero.
The #Seahawks have agreed to terms with No. 16 overall pick Byron Murphy II on a four-year, $16,083,122 million fully guaranteed contract with a fifth-year option, per source.

Byron Murphy II Making Light Work Of Rookie Contract Negotiations
Byron Murphy II signed his first NFL contract after Friday’s rookie minicamp practice, and Seattle will obviously be happy to get what is normally a rudimentary process, but one that can, occasionally, go awry, done over 4 months before the start of the season.
He becomes just the second 1st round pick of the 2024 cycle to have signed his rookie deal, after the Baltimore Ravens’ latest secondary addition, Nate Wiggins, made his contract official on Thursday.
Although questions still remain a very real concern for the Seahawks’ prospects in 2024 and beyond, the Seahawks are smartly controlling what they can control, building up a sneakily impressive defensive line, signing Pro Bowl defensive lineman, Leonard Williams, to a whopping 3 year, $64.5 million deal, veteran stalwart, Jarran Reed, and now Murphy II, in their attempt to continue to build up the trenches.
Putting in place as strong a team; on offense and defense; around potential starters, Geno Smith or Sam Howell, will undoubtedly maximise the value they bring to the team, and also set in place an excellent framework for a future rookie QB, whom the Seattle Seahawks could select as soon as 2025.
