The San Francisco 49ers must be wondering what more they need to do to finally reach the promised land; a Lombardi Trophy.
With no perceivable weaknesses on the roster, outside of a perhaps slightly below par, in pass protection at least, right hand side of the offensive line, the 49ers will have to be rubbing their heads, trying to figure out how to beat Patrick Mahomes.]
Kyle Shanahan Cannot Catch A Break In The Big Game
Kyle Shanahan has now reached 3 Super Bowls; 2 as head coach of the Niners and the last as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons’ infamous 25 point meltdown vs. the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. He has gone to overtime in 2 of them – the only 2 times in NFL history; and more shockingly, surrendered double digit leads in all 3.
Shanahan replaced defensive coordinator Steve Wilks soon after the conclusion of post-season, whose second half gameplan adjustments were widely criticized, and ultimately chose to replace him with an in-house promotion, former defensive passing game specialist, Nick Sorensen.
In addition, the 49ers made multiple additions on the defensive side of the ball, signing double-digit sack artist, Leonard Floyd and former Green Bay Packers All Pro, DeVondre Campbell as highlights from an 11 man haul.
Are The San Francisco 49ers Finally Turning Their Head Towards Offensive Additions?
On offense however, San Francisco has been considerably more reserved, despite the uncertain future of 2023 All Pro receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, who reportedly requested a trade on Sunday, a report that was subsequently vehemently denied by Aiyuk’s agent. Now, however, the Niners have finally added a free agent skill piece to their arsenal, bringing back reciever, return specialist and former Niner, Trent Taylor – also known as “Quality Time” (unbeknownst to me). Per Jordan Schultz.

San Francisco 49ers Bring Back Trent Taylor
We are now in the dog days of free agency of football; we count down the days until the glories of the NFL Draft, then it is rookie minicamp and OTAs, and afterwards the summer void ensues. But, at least we have the good weather.
At this point in the football cycle, the amount of splash wideout free agents not named Odell Beckham Jr or Tyler Boyd available is fairly limited, and the types of players that are left are often role players or return specialists.
Enter, Trent Taylor.
Taylor has never mustered more than 430 rushing yards in a single season, and that was in his rookie season, also with the 49ers. In the 5 years since, the 29 year old has majored as a punt return specialist, reaching a high of 340 yards in 2022 with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Although Taylor is cetainly not the dynamic #3 or #4 option the Niners fanbase may have wanted to shore up an impressive, albeit thin receiving corps, he is definitely a dynamic playmaker that can make things happen from anywhere on the field.
