Jackson County is less than a week from deciding whether they will cave into a threat by the Kansas City Chiefs regarding an extension of a 3/8-cent sales tax through the year 2064. The Chiefs have made it clear they intend to explore options to move from Kansas City if citizens of Jackson County don’t reimpose a tax on themselves (and future generations) to pay for privately owned infrastructure.
The Kansas City Chiefs want upgrades
The Chiefs want to use proceeds from the tax to make renovations to Arrowhead Stadium. Money will also go to build a new ballpark for the Kansas City Royals. Many citizens of Jackson County have voiced their frustrations about being asked to pay a tax to fund a team they can’t afford to go see live. Last week, the Chiefs announced their plans to give $266 million in a community benefits agreement.
The Chiefs think the public will ultimately give in to their ultimatum.

According to Ben Fischer with Sports Business Daily, Chiefs president Mark Donovan said on Thursday the team is “cautiously optimistic” the tax referendum will pass.

The Chiefs and Royals have a few more days to make their case. Citizens will vote on the referendum on April 2.
