The New England Patriots are used to controversy. After ‘The Dynasty’ documentary, many former Patriot players were very upset how the documentary framed the former head coach Bill Belichick. While the doc gave the legendary coach his flowers at times, there was clearly a decision to specifically clip all of the players talking bad about the coach. Now, former players are rallying behind their coach and sharing their distaste for the documentary.
EX New England Patriots Rip Documentary
Many New England Patriots players have come out to rip the documentary as it seemed to be a hit piece on Bill Belichick. Former Patriot DBs Devin McCourty and Rodney Harrison both spoke out against the doc last week, and now Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater joined the former Patriots to set the record straight. Slater Joined Edelman on his podcast, “Games with Names” and said:
“I know there are some comments that I made on there that made it seem like Bill [Belichick] was just this very demanding presence — and he was, but I also want people to see that there are multiple sides of Bill. And it’s tough because I feel like he’s being portrayed in a certain light. And we’re painting a picture, but we’re only showing people part of the picture. With Coach, it’s very complex. And there are things that, you know, were tough, and I’m sure we all feel like, ‘Hey, maybe we wish we had done things this way.’ But let’s make sure none of us forget the fact that the dynasty is not even being talked about without Bill Belichick. And the things that he did were with intentionality and purpose, and I think he got the best out of all of us.”
Both of them wanted to set the record straight that coach Belichick was absolutely integral to the success the team achieved and while they may have issues with some of his decisions, they respect the coach more than anyone.
Julian Edelman Sounds Off On Documentary
Edelman backed everything Slater was saying on the podcast and made sure to set the record straight about how he feels about Belichick and the love he has for the coach.
“I honestly think if you’re in your 30s and you’ve played football, I don’t think you’ve ever liked your football coach. You loved him. But you didn’t like your football coach. Just like I didn’t like my parents when they made me do things that they knew was gonna make me a better person. I didn’t like doing it, we didn’t like doing it, work’s not easy, doing the little [expletive] for preparation, doing walkthroughs for walkthroughs for walkthroughs, I hated it. I [expletive] about it all the time. But we needed it. And that’s why you went into every single game knowing you out prepared that team and you have a shot to win. Every single game.”
There are many who have argued that Belichick did this to himself after treating many players including the great Tom Brady with ‘tough love’ for lack of better words. Belichick also refused, as usual, to answer any questions at all throughout the documentary. At the end of the day however, Belichick was integral to the greatest dynasty ever seen.
