The New York Jets signed Tyrod Taylor to a contract to avoid last season’s mistake of not having a reliable backup quarterback after Aaron Rodgers went down in Week 1.
The Taylor signing could signal a possible Zach Wilson departure, as he demanded a trade last month, and the front office has accepted his request.
Here’s an update on the situation.
The New York Jets have gotten trade offers, but nothing has stood out.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, New York has received trade offers for Wilson, but they don’t like any offers, as they hope for a better deal.
There are two reasons for his lackluster trade market.
Reason #1:
The first reason is the dwindling trade market for the 2021 QB draft class. Three of the five quarterbacks selected in the 1st round were traded.
Trey Lance received the best trade market when the San Francisco 49ers traded him to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2024 fourth-round pick before the start of the 2023 season.
Mac Jones received the worst trade market when the New England Patriots traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2024 sixth-round pick.
Justin Fields received a relatively poor trade market, but there is a condition. The Chicago Bears traded him to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 sixth-round pick, which could result in a fourth-round pick if he plays over 51% of snaps.
The worst part of the dwindling trade market is many people would consider Jones and Fields better than Wilson, meaning New York will likely get a lower pick.
Reason #2:
The second and arguably the biggest reason is his contract for 2024. Wilson will have a cap hit of $11.18 million, including $5.73 million guaranteed and a roster bonus of $4.39 million per Over The Cap. There is a high likelihood that Wilson has not been traded because they want New York to eat part of his salary.
Another contract note is that Wilson has a 5th-year option worth $22.4 million due on May 2, but the option will likely be declined. This means that he will likely be a one-year rental unless he gets extended.
New York’s general manager gave an update on the situation.
Joe Douglas gave a disappointing update on Wilson’s trade talks.
“There’s been a lot of good discussions with his agent, and there’s been some discussions with teams… but I’ve got no news to report, there’s nothing close to being done.”
What team will Zach Wilson be on next season?
