New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is one of the best throwers of the football to have ever played the game. There is no doubt that once his storied career is over, he will be a first-ballot selection for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was also certainly one of the best quarterbacks of the 2010’s, having been named to the Hall of Fame’s All-Decade team for that time period.
Just when many believed that Rodgers was starting to hit his decline, the Green Bay Packers drafted Jordan Love. Playing with a massive chip on his shoulder, the aging quarterback went out and won two more NFL MVP Awards in the 2020’s. Of course, his season last year, his first with the Jets, was cut far too short due to a torn Achilles. Still, that does not change the fact that he is still one of the most highly regarded players in the league.
New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Snubbed from the Pro Football Network’s All-2020’s Team
Even though there have only been four seasons played this decade, the Pro Football Network released their version of the 2020’s All-Decade Team. Keep in mind, the decade is not even half over yet.
Despite the fact that Rodgers has won half of the NFL MVP Awards given out so far this decade, he was not selected as one of the two quarterbacks named to the team:
QUARTERBACK: PATRICK MAHOMES AND JOSH ALLEN
“Already the best player of his generation, Patrick Mahomes is working his way onto the NFL’s Mount Rushmore despite having played just seven seasons. Since 2020, he’s grabbed two Super Bowls and a league MVP while ranking first by a wide margin in EPA per dropback (0.242). Given that he could conceivably suit up for another decade-plus, Mahomes could retire as the league’s greatest player.
“Sixteen NFL QBs have posted at least 2,000 dropbacks over the past four years. While there’s a significant gap between Mahomes and Josh Allen (0.215) in EPA per dropback during that span, there’s another enormous chasm between Allen at No. 2 and the rest of the league. Allen doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring or much personal hardware to speak of, but he’s been the league’s second-best signal-caller of the decade.”
There is no argument that Patrick Mahomes certainly belongs on this list. However, one has to wonder if Josh Allen really deserves the nod over Rodgers.
To be fair, Rodgers did miss, essentially, all of last season. Perhaps that is what hurt his case, besides the selectors’ focus on EPA as the deciding factor in which players get chosen.
However, a deeper look at their numbers shows that, at the very least, Rodgers should have been given more consideration.
Should New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Have Been Chosen Over Josh Allen?
As mentioned, the decade is not even half-way over yet, so this team should look very different by the time 2030 rolls around. That being said, it is hard to justify leaving the player who has won half of the NFL MVP Awards of the decade thus far off of the All-Decade Team.
One has to assume that it is because of Rodgers’ injury last season and the time that he missed as a result, because a look at how their numbers compare since 2020 shows that the four-time NFL MVP isn’t someone who should easily be left off in favor of Allen:
Aaron Rodgers | Josh Allen | |
Completion % | 68% | 65.5% |
Passing Yards | 12,109 | 17,540 |
Touchdowns | 111 | 137 |
Interceptions | 21 | 57 |
Passer Rating | 107.9 | 96.9 |
NFL MVP | 2 | 0 |
Playoff Record | 1-2 | 5-4 |
As one can see, most of the categories in which Allen outperforms Rodgers is because he stayed healthy last year while the former did not. However, Rodgers has still won more MVP’s, has thrown just 26 touchdowns less, and incredibly has thrown 36 fewer interceptions.
Allen has performed much better in the NFL Playoffs, of course, and perhaps that also could be an argument for his inclusion over Rodgers.
However, it is difficult to say that he has been easily the second-best quarterback in the NFL over the last four years when Rodgers has won the MVP Award in half of those seasons.
