The New York Giants have had some talented wide receivers throughout the history of the franchise. They have not had a 1,000-yard receiver since Odell Beckham Jr. Some wide receivers in the past have also played a huge role in winning a Super Bowl title.
The New York Giants are not close to winning a Super Bowl title anytime soon as they are trying to rebuild the roster. New York will have questions about the wide receiver position and also other positions.
New York Giants Super Bowl Champion Wide Receiver Hakeem Nicks Gives Advice To Rookie Malik Nabers
Nicks was a first-round selection of the Giants in the 2009 NFL Draft out of North Carolina. He was drafted to become the top receiver after Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer were not around anymore. Hakeem Nicks had a very good career for the New York Giants.
He helped them win a Super Bowl Championship in 2011 as the number-one wide receiver for quarterback Eli Manning. Along with Hakeem Nicks, the Giants also had Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham as the receiving options.
Nicks in 15 games that season caught 76 passes for 1,192 yards receiving and seven touchdowns, along with averaging 15.7 yards per reception. In four playoff games that year, he caught 28 passes for 444 yards receiving and four touchdowns, along with averaging 15.9 yards per reception. Nicks was targeted 43 times.
Just like Hakeem Nicks, Malik Nabers was a first-round selection from LSU. Nicks told Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post:
“Focus on the task. The main thing is you got drafted to be a wide receiver and play football. Everything else that comes, don’t jump on the wave. That’s my advice. Because if you ride it when it’s up, you better be able to take it when it goes down. Just do what you do that got you to this point.”
Hakeem Nicks feels like Malik Nabers is a lot like him when he first entered the league. Hakeem Nicks also added to the New York Post:
“He kind of reminds me of myself, looking at his run-after-the-catch. Not one person is going to bring him down. He showed on his film that he can take a little slant and take it to the house, kind of Odell Beckham-style. LSU, they breed some good wide receivers down there. I’m happy with that pick.”
It was really important that the Giants drafted the best player available with the sixth selection in the 2024 NFL Draft instead of reaching for a quarterback like Michael Penix Jr. or J.J. McCarthy. Had they decided to do that instead of drafting Malik Nabers, it would have been a bad move.
General manager Joe Schoen made the smart move by drafting Nabers. It is going to help out head coach Brian Daboll and the New York Giants for the long haul.
