The Kansas City Chiefs’ inconsistent backfield was overshadowed during the franchise’s 2023 Super Bowl run by the poor play of Patrick Mahomes‘ wide receiving corps, but, adding an explosive running back alongside the All-Pro MVP could be on the docket for GM Brett Veach during the NFL Draft.
While Isaiah Pacheco showed flashes last season, while rushing for 935 yards and seven scores, the second-year former seventh-round pick only averaged 4.6 yards per carry, and the Chiefs seem most effective when utilizing a running back by committee approach.
However, given that this is a down running back class, and there might only be one or two feature backs to emerge, Veach may look to trade for a veteran.
Trading for Chicago Bears RB Khalil Herbert Makes Sense for Kansas City Chiefs
Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert could be a name to watch on the trade market during this week’s draft, and the Chiefs are an ideal fit.
Herbert is now expendable in Chicago, following the arrival of free agent acquisition D’Andre Swift, and Roschon Johnson burst onto the seen as a rookie.
Trading for Herbert, who has rushed for 1,775 yards with eight touchdowns through his first 42 games, would be the kind of cap-savvy move Veach and the Chiefs have grown accustomed to making in recent seasons, as the former sixth-round pick is still on his rookie contract.
Herbert has only averaged 8.6 rushing attempts per game, so he has low mileage on his tires, and could thrive in Andy Reid’s offense, and with the amount of explosive playmaking ability around him in the Chiefs’ passing game which could create opportunities to break off some big runs.
If the Bears call the Chiefs and offer Herbert in exchange for something in the range of a fifth-round pick, the economics and on-field upside of the trade may both be too alluring for Veach and Kansas City to pass up.
