The New England Patriots’ draft plan should be clear after a report by Albert Breer with Sports Illustrated On Friday. The Patriots are expected to take a quarterback with the No. 3 pick.
The 2024 NFL Draft is becoming more clear
Caleb Williams is all but a lock to be taken by the Chicago Bears at No. 1 in April. The other top quarterback prospects in the draft are Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy.
Per Breer, the Commanders are leaning toward drafting Daniels with the No. 2 pick in the draft.
“The more I’ve started to ask around, the more it seems like Jayden Daniels is probably the leader in the clubhouse to be a Commander,” Breer said.
“It does match up with what [Commanders OC] Kliff Kingsbury’s looked for in his quarterbacks over the years. Obviously, Jayden Daniels had a great season last season at LSU. And he’s probably, I think arguably, the most ready to play of the three guys at the top of the draft. He’s played the most football.”

The Patriots are reportedly unable to move up from No. 3 to make a splash for Williams or whoever their preference is between Daniels and Maye.
The New York Giants are leaning toward J.J. McCarthy
As previously discussed by GH, Daniels and Maye are considered a sure thing to be drafted in the top 3. The New York Giants wanted Daniels, but both they and the Minnesota Vikings are doing their homework on McCarthy because they think there is a possibility for a trade with the Arizona Cardinals at No. 4.
Per John Frascella with Razzball, the Giants planned to take LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels in the draft. But because of his popularity with the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots, the Giants have set their sights on J.J. McCarthy…
The Giants might want McCarthy at No. 6, but there is no guarantee he’ll be around when New York has the potential to take him there. The Minnesota Vikings, Las Vegas Raiders, and Denver Broncos are expected to try to trade up for McCarthy. The Vikings recently made a trade for a second first-round pick in the draft, so they could potentially make another trade for a quarterback like McCarthy before the No. 6 pick.
The New England Patriots are likely to draft Drake Maye
Using the process of elimination, the Patriots are expected to settle for Maye. Reports came out near the NFL Combine that teams view Williams as the best quarterback in the draft, with Maye and Daniels in the second tier. McCarthy is obviously the next prize for teams who can’t get into the top three of the draft.
Maye should excite the Patriots fanbase. Before Daniels’ Heisman campaign, Maye was considered the unanimous second-best quarterback in the draft before the 2023 season. Maye has a high ceiling and should put the Patriots in the best position they’ve been in under center since Tom Brady.
