The Dallas Cowboys are entering a pivotal offseason.
Jerry Jones opted to retain Mike McCarthy as the team’s head coach — and while the former Packers Super Bowl HC has found a way to get Dallas to thrive in the regular season — the postseason woes that have plagued the franchise for so long have continued.\
This year truly felt different and many smart people throughout the NFL believed the Cowboys were a legitimate Super Bowl contender. But in typical fashion, Dak Prescott and company lost in the first round in the WIldcard matchup against a young Green Bay Packers team. The Cowboys were great on their home turf all season but choked when it mattered the most.
This year, the Dallas Cowboys offense appeared to have a major boost on offense under McCarthy after firing former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Suddenly, Dak Prescott put together one of his best NFL seasons and CeeDee Lamb emerged as the dominant No. 1 WRthe team has been hoping for.
It’s almost impossible to move on from Prescott at this point, so it makes sense for Jerry Jones to bring McCarthy back for at least one more year to see if he can somehow get past this team’s postseason woes.
The news come as a shock as the owner is known for making abrupt moves in hopes for winning another Super Bowl, but Jones released a statement clearly backing McCarthy.
I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement Wednesday night. “There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach.
Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively. Mike has the highest regular-season winning percentage of any head coach in Cowboys history and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our postseason goals. Certainly, Mike’s career has demonstrated postseason success at a high level, and we have great confidence that can continue.”
The irony? Dallas has almost done nothing to add talent to the same team that fell short last year and hasn’t reached contract extensions for its three biggest stars.
Prescott and the Cowboys have apparently agreed to play out the final year of his contract, creating doubt about the QB’s future in Dallas. CeeDee Lamb has skipped offseason voluntary workouts as he waits for a contract extension and Micah Parsons has been secured through 2025 by the team opting to exercise his 5th-year option, but the team will have to pay him sooner rather than later.
Detroit Newspaper Takes Hilarious Shot At Dallas Cowboys Ahead Of NFL Draft
At this point, the Cowboys brass have put all their chips in the NFL Draft to add the talent necessary to make a run at a Super Bowl in 2024.
Detroit hosts the 2024 NFL Draft, a three-day event starting Thursday night. The morning before Round 1, the Detroit Free Press took an unproved shot at “America’s Team.”
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: With the football world descending upon Detroit today for the #NFLDraft, including fans of all 32 NFL teams, this is a great opportunity to remind Dallas Cowboys fans that the Detroit Lions have been to more NFC championship games this millennium,” the publication wrote on social media.
Ouch. But also accurate.
The Cowboys have not played in a conference championship game since defeating Brett Favre’s Green Bay Packers on Jan. 14, 1996. They beat the Pittsburgh Steelers to win their third Super Bowl in a four-year window.
Last season looked like a golden opportunity for the Dallas Cowboys to snap their conference-title drought, but they lost in the first round to the Packers instead. They’ve won three playoff games over the last 14 seasons.
On the other hand, the Lions have spent the 21st century as the NFL’s laughingstock. That changed when they won the NFC North with a 12-5 record, despite a controversial call costing them a victory at Dallas in December.
Detroit hadn’t won a playoff game in 32 years before defeating the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately, the Lions squandered a chance to make their first Super Bowl appearance when blowing a 24-7 lead to the San Francisco 49ers.
Jerry Jones has said the Dallas Cowboys are “all-in” for 2024, but so far they have done little to make that a reality. They better ace this year’s draft.
