Despite a crushing, come-from-behind defeat at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, the Detroit Lions have many reasons to maintain hope.
Detroit Lions Looking To Capitalize On Momentum Of An Impressive 2023 Season
Firstly, a nice offseason culminated in the shrewd signings of defensive lineman, Marcus Davenport and DJ Reader and a trade for lockdown corner, Carlton Davis.
Secondly, losing minimal key players to the pit of free agency, with only stud guard, Jonah Jackson leaving the team – which the Lions mitigated well with the addition of former Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowler, Kevin Zeitler.
And thirdly, they have now managed to lock up 2 of their franchise cornerstones for the foreseeable future. Having already re-upped Amon-Ra St. Brown to a whopping 4 year, $120 million deal, the Detroit Lions are now extending franchise tackle and 1st Team All Pro, Penei Sewell, per Mike Garafolo.
Sources: #Lions All-Pro OT Penei Sewell has agreed to terms on a four-year, $112 million extension that makes him the new highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

Penei Sewell Signing A Record Breaking Deal To Stay In Detroit
Penei Sewell’s rise, however impressive has not been a shock to anyone who has followed the former Oregon man’s career. He has been a dominant force at tackle since high school, and seems to bully edge defenders and d-lineman no matter which level he plays at.
Although Sewell notably struggled initially getting to grips playing on the right side of the offensive line, having been a career left tackle prior to his move to the pros, but has since formed one of the NFL’s most formidable tackle duos with Taylor Decker – and been key member of what is widely considered a top 5 offensive line in the league.
And coming off his best year, in which he made the 1st team All Pro for the first time, it is no wonder that Sewell has earned the right to be highest paid ‘Big Boy’ on the offensive side of the ball, making an average of $28 million/year, a little under his teammate, St. Brown’s average of $30 million.
The previous high was Laremy Tunsil’s $25 million/year, which Sewell’s new contract has now very much blown out of the water.
Now, Sewell’s draftclass mate, Rashawn Slater, will be next on the tackle pay-list; whilst he likely won’t quite hit the heights of the Oregon alum’s mega-deal after not being able to sustain the elite play of his rookie season, he is certainly due for an impressive deal nonetheless.
