The Detroit Lions had one glaring issue last season that kept the team from making the Super Bowl and that was their secondary. However, instead of making a free agent signing, they decided to make a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get a new member of their secondary.
The full trade saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trade away a 2024 and 2025 sixth-round pick as well as cornerback Carlton Davis III for the Detroit Lions’ 2024 third-round pick. Davis has played 76 games throughout his six seasons and has nine interceptions, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 324 total tackles (268 solo, 56 assisted).
This defense has re-signed cornerback Emmanuel Moseley and now has added a new member to the secondary. If they can continue to improve the secondary and add talent to this young group ready to explode, the Detroit Lions could be a serious threat in the NFC for years to come.
What else does the Detroit Lions need to do this offseason?
This Detroit Lions team has proven to be a solid team that is full of talent and had the San Francisco 49ers on the ropes in the NFC Championship Game. They still need to make another signing or move to address the secondary as they do not have safety CJ Gardner-Johnson or cornerback Kindle Vildor under contract.
If this team addresses the secondary woes a bit more and gets a solid safety or another quality cornerback, this team will be viewed in a different light. They can do so with the 29th pick in the 2024 NFL draft. The Lions also need to improve the offensive line but have focused more on getting their players back as they re-signed starting left guard Graham Glasgow.
They need to address the right guard as starter Halapoulivaati Vaitai remains unsigned as of this writing. While the team is not expected to be major players in free agency, adding some talent is critical to show the team they are trying to improve.
