Bill Belichick did not have a glowing scouting report of new NFL quarterback Drake Maye. The New England Patriots drafted their quarterback of the future on Thursday night – Drake Maye. The team elected not to trade away their third overall pick and draft the elite level prospect.
Bill Belichick Crushed Drake Maye As A Prospect
Bill Belichick did not hold back at all on the “The Pat McAfee Show Draft Spectacular” Thursday night. He dug into many players that were going to go in the top 10 picks, but it was specifically ironic that he absolutely crushed Maye who ended up being his former teams first pick.
Belichick specifically did not like Maye’s footwork at all. But that was not the only flaw he saw, as he had many negatives to say about Maye:
“His footwork needs a lot of work,” Belichick said. “You can see here he’s all over the place, never really sets his feet, never really gets into position to throw. He gets strip-sacked. Too much hopping around. Step up and throw!”
Here is the full breakdown that Belichick had on Maye before he was drafted by his former team:

Funnily enough, Belichick was not as critical of Maye after he was drafted by the Patriots:

New England Patriots Disagree With Bill Belichick
“I think you get so many possession in college football. Now that I’m going to be in the NFL, I need to know when to hit the checkdown or throw the ball out of bounds,” Maye told The Spun. “Every drive is important in the NFL. You need to avoid making risky throws that you could get away with in college.”
“He’s a player that elevates those around him and that’s really all you can ask for at the quarterback position,” Wolf said. “Obviously he’s got a lot of talent. He’s athletic, he’s big and strong. He’s young. I feel like there’s a lot of upside to his game.”“One thing about Drake, and we kind of talked about it this past year, [UNC] also had some holes on offense, and the thing that most impressed me about him, he would get smashed and just get right back up,” Mayo said. “That’s the same trait — you had a guy like Tom Brady — not saying that he’s Tom, but just that mentality.”“Same thing with Joe Burrow. Those guys just keep getting back up and continuing to play at a high level, and that was like the a-ha moment for me.”
The 21-year-old is fearless in the pocket and makes gutsy tight-window throws that pro scouts love to see. Those traits, along with athleticism to move outside the pocket and a good touch on his deep ball, make Maye an enticing talent as he transitions to the NFL.
