Andy Reid is certainly an interesting coach. Without his on-the-field success, many would see him as an outsider with his unique personality, hobbies, and let’s be honest, love of food. If you were to create the stereotypical coach on AI, Coach Andy Reid would not be one of the first few results.
Yet, that makes him such an interesting figure in the NFL. There isn’t another coach in the NFL or any U.S. professional sport filming State Farm commercials where he is leaning into his love of food. In other words, he is a likable coach, and his unique approach to the game is one of his great attributes that has led to the team’s success over the past five years.
On Wednesday, he added to his unique approach.
Andy Reid Has a Unique Approach to Team Building

Andy Reid understands the importance of building up the team on and off the field. This is very common in high school and college, where players are still very much bought into the concept of a team, but in the NFL, it is tougher to get the buy-in since players are often looking more for themselves and their own paychecks.
Rather than leaning into team-building activities such as team trips, meals, or other events, Reid believes that one of the best ways to build up the team is through service. On the subject, Reid said the following at a fundraising banquet held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in New York City:
“We think it (service) bilds unity…We come from all different backgrounds, and so to be able to bring us all together and do that even makes us a greater team, and a stronger team…It’s a little bit like when they ask you to run wind sprints… You hate it in the minute, but you love it when you’re done and feel pretty good about yourself. So sometimes that happens with charity work.”
Reid is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which promotes service and ministering in the community. Utah, which has the highest LDS population (about 45% of the state) has by far the highest rate of service of any state in the U.S.

The Kansas City Chiefs are known for their community involvement. Last year, players gave out free Peacock subscriptions before their playoff game, which was only available via streaming. Kansas City also has one of the strongest youth camps in the nation with its Chiefs Kingdom Kids programs and the flag football team through the NFL.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes started a foundation called “15 and the Mahomies,” where he helps and encourages youth 11-18 to volunteer at least 15 hours during the summer while off from school. This past year, 22,764 hours of community service were performed through this program.
Travis Kelce started a foundation, “87 and Running,” which allows more than 2,300 children access remote learning support and after-school programs.
Team Culture is a Big Reason the Chiefs are Successful

Let’s be honest: to make it to the NFL, you have to have a certain type of personality, and a lot of times, when too many people with that kind of personality get together, it causes issues, even while having success. We’ve all seen time after time players get mad and frustrated at other players, coaches, and the team despite having success.
While the Chiefs haven’t had the perfect locker room during these five years of success, they have mostly been able to keep their core together and happy. Could some of this be attributed to the service that Coach Reid promotes?
It certainly can’t hurt.
