Trey Benson was the second running back selected in the 2024 NFL draft. The Arizona Cardinals used the 66th overall pick to draft Benson. Here, we will discuss what to expect from Benson in his rookie season and how he could impact fantasy football.
Trey Benson Fantasy Football Outlook for the 2024 Season
Trey Benson’s College Career
Trey Benson started his college career at the University of Oregon in 2020. Unfortunately, Benson did not see the field in 2020 due to COVID. In 2021 Benson saw little playing time and accumulated 22 rushing yards and a single rushing touchdown.
After the 2021 season, Trey Benson entered the transfer portal and transferred to Florida State to finish his college career. In 2022, Benson earned the starting job for the Seminoles and had nine touchdowns to go along with 990 yards rushing. Trey Benson came back to Florida State for one final season in 2023. During his final season, Benson had over 900 yards rushing and 14 rushing touchdowns.
Once Benson declared for the 2024 NFL draft, he was considered to be one of the top running back prospects. At the combine, Benson showed that he was one of the best overall running backs in the class. He revealed that he had the strength to run between the tackles, while also having the speed to run outside.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals used the 66th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft to select Trey Benson. The Cardinals used their fourth pick in the draft to take a running back.
Running back depth was a big need for the Cardinals going into the draft. Starting running back James Conner was injured in 2023 which led to having multiple backups trying to fill the starting role. Adding Benson to this offense gives the Cardinals a great backup to start the 2024 season.
Fantasy Football Impact
Conner’s contract is also up after next year which means that Benson is primed to be the future starter for Arizona. With Conners injury history there is a very good chance that Benson will be the starting running back for the Cardinals at some point during the 2024 season. Going into the season as RB2, Benson’s rookie season is very difficult to predict as it is very dependent on James Conner’s health.
I predict that Benson will have over 500 rushing yards while splitting carries with James Conner in 2024. Currently, FantasyPros has Benson listed at 115th on their big board, which makes him their 36th running back. He is predicted to be a ninth-round pick in 12-team redrafts. This seems like a good price to pay for a running back that has a ton of potential, but also many unknowns about his workload. In the ninth round, Beson would be most fantasy teams running back three or four.
Benson should be a good bench player to start the season with a chance to get into your starting lineup in the second half of the year.
