The Kansas City Chiefs and a few AFC contenders are reportedly interested in a three-time Pro Bowl tight end this season. A couple of significant bidding wars could be coming for talent ahead of the playoffs.
This week, the Arizona Cardinals surprised the NFL world by parting ways with tight end Zach Ertz. The veteran tight end asked to be released from the 2-10 team. Ertz wasn’t utilized much in the Cardinals offseason this season; he had 27 catches for 187 yards, and one touchdown.

According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, the Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens are three AFC contenders interested in Ertz. (The Philadelphia Eagles are also interested in Ertz.)

The Chiefs already have an elite tight end, Travis Kelce. However, that’s basically all the Chiefs have as a reliable pass catcher this season. The Chiefs lead the league in dropped passes this year.
The Bills and Ravens need a tight end after major injuries. Bills tight end Dawson Knox had to have wrist surgery and was placed on injured reserve. Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is on injured reserve for an ankle injury.
AFC Bidding war coming?
The Chiefs, Ravens, and Bills are looking to make moves before the playoffs. Those three teams are considered favorites to make the AFC Champions game. We’ll see which of these teams is willing to go deep into their pocketbook to sign a player that could give them an advantage.
Ertz is in a perfect position as a free agent to start a bidding war between the AFC teams. Could the Super Bowl LII champion find his way back to a football game in February with one of the league’s best quarterbacks?
