Welcome to the last installment of the worst offseason acquisition series. This series reviews each division’s worst acquisition from the 2023 offseason. We will review the NFC West.
Criteria for this series:
All individuals featured in this series must fulfill the specified criteria. The players on this list are those who joined a new team through trades or signings in the offseason, excluding draft picks, re-signed players, players claimed during roster cuts, regular season signings, or trades during the NFL Trade Deadline.
These players are also judged based on their contracts and expectations for the 2023 season.
Arizona Cardinals’ worst offseason acquisition: LG Elijah Wilkinson
Arizona signed Elijah Wilkinson to a 1-year, $1,232,500 contract with the expectation of being their starting left guard.
Wilkinson started the first six games of the season. He suffered a neck injury in Week 6 and missed the next seven games. He returned in Week 14 and started the last three games.
Wilkinson had six penalties, three sacks allowed, and a 46.2 PFF Grade.
Los Angeles Rams’ worst offseason acquisition: TE Hunter Long
Los Angeles traded Jalen Ramsey to Miami in exchange for Hunter Long and a 2023 third-round pick. Los Angeles traded for Long, expecting to bring depth to the tight end position.
Long battled injuries in his first season with Los Angeles. He missed the first nine games with a thigh injury and the last four with a torn MCL.
Long was not effective in the passing game, recording zero receptions.
San Francisco 49ers’ worst offseason acquisition: CB Isaiah Oliver
San Francisco signed Isaiah Oliver to a 2-year, $6,750,000 contract with the expectation of being their starting slot cornerback.
Oliver struggled this season, and San Francisco benched him. They inserted Ambry Thomas as the outside cornerback and moved Deommodore Lenoir to the slot.
Oliver had 67 tackles, one interception, and two pass deflections. He allowed 42 receptions on 50 targets for 272 yards, three touchdowns, and a 101 passer rating.
Seattle Seahawks’ worst offseason acquisition: LB Devin Bush Jr.
Seattle signed Devin Bush Jr. to a 1-year, $3,500,000 contract with the expectation of bringing depth at the linebacker position behind Jordyn Brooks and Bobby Wagner.
Bush was a healthy scratch in four games and appeared in zero defensive snaps in five.
Bush recorded 37 tackles and five for a loss.
