Welcome to the sixth installment of the worst offseason acquisition series. This series reviews each division’s worst acquisition from the 2023 offseason. We will review the NFC North.
Criteria for this series
All individuals featured in this series must fulfill the specified criteria. The players on this list are those who joined a new team through trades or signings in the offseason, excluding draft picks, re-signed players, players claimed during roster cuts, regular season signings, or trades during the NFL Trade Deadline.
These players are also judged based on their contracts and expectations for the 2023 season.
Chicago Bears’ worst offseason acquisition: DL Yannick Ngakoue
Chicago signed Yannick Ngakoue to a 1-year, $10,500,000 contract with the expectation of helping the 32nd-ranked defense in sacks from last season.
Ngakoue also had his worst statistical season as a pro with 22 tackles (lowest in his career), six for a loss (lowest in his career), seven QB hits (lowest in his career), and four sacks (lowest in his career).
Detroit Lions’ worst offseason acquisition: CB Cameron Sutton
Detroit signed Cameron Sutton to a 3-year, $33,000,000 contract with the expectation of being their number one cornerback and helping the 3rd-worst passing defense from last season.
Detroit had the 6th-worst passing defense this season, and Sutton struggled in his first season with the team.
Sutton had 65 tackles, one interception, six pass deflections, and one forced fumble. He allowed 61 receptions on 91 targets for 888 yards, five touchdowns, and a 112.3 passer rating.
Green Bay Packers’ worst offseason acquisition: LS Matt Orzech
Green Bay signed Matt Orzech to a 3-year, $3,675,000 contract with the expectation of being their long-term long snapper.
Part of the reason why Anders Carlson struggled in his rookie season is because Orzech struggled with snapping the ball.
Minnesota Vikings’ worst offseason acquisition: LB Marcus Davenport
Minnesota signed Marcus Davenport to a 1-year, $13,000,000 with the expectation of being a reliable pass rusher on the opposite side of Danielle Hunter.
Unfortunately, Davenport was limited to four games this season and missed 13 because of a high ankle sprain.
Davenport recorded seven tackles, two for a loss, four QB hits, and two sacks.
