It’s no secret that Auburn isn’t very well-liked amongst the media. Every prediction post you see about the SEC most likely has Auburn finishing last in the SEC West. So why is everyone sleeping on Auburn?
The Media’s Impression of Auburn
It all started last season when Auburn ended the season with an 0-5 record. After Bo Nix went down the Auburn offense fell completely apart. Despite almost knocking off top-ranked Alabama the media won’t give second-year head coach Bryan Harsin another look. “The false inquiry,” that Harsin spoke about was an uncomfortable experience for Harsin, his family, and the program. Now some see that as a downside, but others inside the program talk about how it’s brought them closer together. Auburn lost a lot of Malzhan’s former recruits this offseason and the others who stayed, backed Harsin all the way. The reason Harsin gets hate from the media and boosters is that he doesn’t follow their wild narrative or agenda.
No matter what the coaches say or see in practice the media and most of the fans will always keep the same idea of TJ Finley as well. They don’t believe a quarterback can improve in the offseason. The media only see the transfers out of Auburn, the accusations, and the departure of Allen Greene. You won’t hear any of the media talk about how good the Auburn defense has looked this year, the improvement of the receiving core, and an experienced offensive line. Hope and optimism aren’t the best things for Auburn and the team usually performs best when they’re doubted.
While Auburn’s schedule is consistently one of the hardest in the country, they have a great chance to start 5-0 in the first five games. The Tigers have five straight home games to start the year. If they can manage wins against LSU and Penn State early on they could ride some momentum going into SEC play. The quarterback situation hasn’t wrapped up just yet. I will say this though if TJ Finley gets rolling and looks like a whole new quarterback, then Auburn could make a run and find themselves in SEC contention come November.
