The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off their 2024 offseason with a couple of expected cuts one of those being safety Keanu Neal. which leave their safety room in a bad spot. For some reason there are a ton of top tier free agent Safeties on the market and here is who the steelers should look to sign.
Steelers Safety Room
Other than Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Steelers have Demonte Kazee, and Trenton Thompson on roster for the 2024 season, along with little depth at corner, the Steelers would be stupid not to add a star safety with this massive free agent class.
Kamren Curl
Even though it is very likely that Kamren Curl and the Commanders get a deal done, if they were stupid enough to let him walk, the Steelers should jump on the opportunity. As a seventh-round pick Curl has been a stud for the commanders ever since he stepped on the field. It looks like its going to take around 12 million annually to get Curl, but he would make an awesome partner to Minkah in the Steelers secondary.
Julian Blackmon
The former Colts safety was a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and was a key piece of the Colts defense in his first four years. The Utah native had four interceptions and eight passes defended during the 2023 season. Blackmon came into the league young at will have just turned 26 next season and should not require a massive contact to be signed. Putting Blackmon beside Fitzpatrick would make the Steelers have one of the best safety duos in the NFL for years to come.
Mike Edwards
The 28-year-old defensive back has been a great player on every team he has been on in his career. Edwards started his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he played four seasons, before he went to the Kansas City Chiefs last year. In his five seasons Edwards has proven himself as a winner with winning two super bowls. Adding Edwards to Pittsburgh Steelers defense would help to give more veteran presence in their young secondary.
Jordan Whitehead
Whitehead one of the best years of his career in 2023 with the New York Jets, where he had four interceptions and nine passes defended. The Pittsburgh native is going into his seventh year of his career after spending four with the Buccaneers and the last two with the Jets. The contract for Whitehead is projected to be around eight million per year, which is a great price for a good veteran to add to the Steelers secondary.
These are just a couple of options for Pittsburgh, and as a fan it will surprise me if they make any big splash move in free agency, but I still believe they should. This is the best safety free agent class I have ever seen, and the Steelers should jump on it, to add a piece to their mediocre secondary.
