Michael Penix Jr. had another sensational game to help the Washington Huskies take down the Texas Longhorns in the Sugar Bowl and secure their ticket to the College Football Playoff National Championship. However, he wants everyone to know–even the Michigan Wolverines–that he has yet to play his best game.
Penix Jr., who was a Heisman Trophy finalist this 2023 season, showed Texas why he’s such a threat for anyone. He got the Huskies off to a terrific start, connecting with wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk in their fourth play on offense for a 77-yard gain.
It quickly put Washington in a second-and-goal situation, and they didn’t waste the opportunity to score for the 7-0 lead. And they did all that in less than four minutes of play.

It was only the beginning, as Penix finished the game with 430 yards and two touchdowns on an efficient 29-of-38 pass completion. The way he managed the game and stay composed really stood out, and it’s a big reason why they won.
While the game wasn’t decided until the final play–when Elijah Jackson swiped a Quinn Ewers pass to Adonai Mitchell–Penix and Washington were in full control and deservingly took the W.
After the game, Michael Penix Jr. was asked if that was his best game with the Washington Huskies after declaring in the previous week that he has yet to really play to his full potential.
The 23-year-old Penix quickly said no, as he highlighted that his best game is reserved for the final game of the year: the College Football Playoff National Championship.
“Nah, we got one more to go. We got one more to go,” Penix exclaimed in what could easily be taken as a big warning to the Michigan Wolverines, whom they will face in Houston for the title.
Michael Penix Jr., Washington Huskies Have Touch Challenge Waiting vs. Michigan Wolverines
Sure enough, the Washington Huskies will need Michael Penix Jr. to play his best game next Monday when they face the Michigan Wolverines. After all, like the Huskies, the Wolverines are also undefeated this season.
Not to mention that Jim Harbaugh’s men head to the game with plenty of motivation after they found themselves embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal.
Michigan also has the advantage in their head-to-head matchups. The two teams have met 13 times before, with the Wolverines winning eight of those matches. Nonetheless, the last time both teams played each other was in 2021, a time when the Huskies still don’t have Penix and head coach Kalen DeBoer.
The Wolverines are unarguably the most fundamentally sound team in college football this 2023, so regardless of their history and recent improvements, Penix and the Huskies will have their work cut out for them.
