The moment the Washington Commanders found out about the Kliff Kingsbury acquisition, it became clear that the team may be making a move toward Caleb Williams. It was a football decision that many in the NFL accepted.
However, there’s one prominent media personality who’s not taking the Kliff Kingsbury hiring too kindly. In fact, he even brought a controversial topic to light as he went about his epic rant.
Stephen A. Smith ranted about Washington Commanders Kingsbury’s hire, implying racial bias
Eric Italiano of the BroBible published a piece that went into detail of Smith’s epic rant on the hiring of Kingsbury as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator over someone like Eric Bienemy.
According to Smith, Kingsbury being hired by the Commanders — who recently signed former Dallas Cowboys defense coordinator Dan Quinn as their [head coach] — “is the kind of stuff that doesn’t happen for Black folks.”
“I challenge anybody in football to tell me I’m wrong about this: this man is more known for his relationships with quarterbacks and that fly a– crib he had during the NFL Draft than he is for winning football games. That is a fact. It cannot be disputed,” Smith said.
“When we talk about diversity, we certainly saw Black coaches getting hired and all that other stuff, that’s not where I’m going. I’m saying from a historical perspective, we look at a guy like Kliff Kingsbury and you know what we see as Black folks? ‘Ah, see, this is is the kinda stuff that don’t happen for Black folks’.
While Smith may be onto something with his epc monologue, his assessment of Kingbury may be a little off the mark. After, he was the Texas Tech head coach that transformed Patrick Mahomes into one of the most dangerous QBs in the NFL. He was also responsible for turning Kyler Murray into an effective signal-caller with the Arizona Cardinals.
The Washington Commanders are getting a solid coach in Kingsbury, and race shouldn’t just be used brashly to explain why Bienemy (who is an excellent coach himself) is not getting any nods for head coaching or offensive coordinator roles. The issue may be far more complex than that. Until someone speaks up on the matter, we may never know why he’s not getting the head coaching job he deserves.
